The local climate is one of the many considerations when it comes to window replacement. With the winter season now approaching, many homeowners may be looking to tackle this home improvement project. Before making their purchases, however, they must make sure the units can handle frigid weather.
Today, Sentry Exteriors, one of the leading window and roofing contractors in the area, explains the things you need to look for in energy-efficient windows.
The ENERGY STAR® Label
Windows that have met the Environmental Protection Agency’s stringent standards for energy efficiency have this recognizable blue label. When shopping for windows, look for labels that state “ENERGY STAR® Certified in All 50 States” or “ENERGY STAR Certified in Highlighted Regions.” Make sure the state of Virginia is highlighted in the label if you encounter the latter label.
Apart from the ENERGY STAR label, you should also look for window ratings set forth by the NFRC. These indicate whether a window is more suitable to warm, cold, or temperate climates. Make sure to check the ratings for the following:
U-Factor – This indicates the window’s insulation capabilities. The lower its value, the better a window can insulate your home and prevent heat loss.Solar Heat Gain Coefficient
(SHGC) – This indicates how much heat your window can block. Window and gutter companies recommend getting new windows with high SHGC ratings, especially if you live in areas with cold climates.
Air Leakage – This indicates the amount of air that can go through the window assembly. Aim for a lower rating for this, which means less air will pass through the window.
Your new windows should also come with low emissivity (low-E) glass. In areas with colder climates, window glass has special coatings that are applied to the windows’ interior glass to prevent heat loss. With these coatings, only visible light can pass through the glass while blocking both ultraviolet and infrared rays of the sun. This filtering ability helps limit your heating usage, causing a significant dip in your energy consumption.
