Spring has just arrived, and you might feel like you need to do a little inspection around your home. You see your roof and want to check whether it had any damages over the winter months. As one of the top professional roof and gutter companies, we want to make sure your roof is safe and undamaged. With that said, here’s a checklist to walk you through your springtime inspection.
1. Roofing Materials
You need to check your roof’s shingles or tiles and see if there is any visible damage. If there are any cracked or loose shingles/tiles then you should have it repaired immediately. It’s not hard to do this by yourself if the damage is fairly minor and if you’re up for it. But if you see that the damage is worse, then you should call a professional roofing contractor to get the job done properly.
2. Gutters and Downspouts
It’s important that your gutters and downspouts are free from small debris and other material lodged within them during the winter months. They need to be clean so that the water flows easily off your roof and prevent any water damage. You also need to check whether your gutter guards have been damaged over the winter months. Depending on the damage, you may have to replace the guards immediately to prevent small debris from entering and clogging your gutters.
3. Check Around Your Roof
If you see any trees overhanging the roof of your home, then it’s best to trim them off immediately. The branches can damage your roof’s shingles which can expose the underlayment beneath it. If you have trees that are too close, they could fall and cause damage to your home during harsh weather conditions. Maintaining the branches on your trees can also prevent small debris from entering your gutters.
4. Flashing and Underlayment
Roof flashing is the strips installed in the joints and areas of your roof that are prone to leaks, such as around chimneys or areas where the walls meet the roof. Roofing underlayment is a layer of water-resistant material installed between the outer roofing material and the insulation layer inside your home. These both serve to protect your home from water leaks, but they won’t be fully effective when they’re damaged. If you see that some of your roof’s flashing has been separated, they should be resealed immediately.
Check to see if your attic is dry and free from leaks and cracks coming from the roof. Also, check whether you get a musty smell and any sign of mold growth. If left unattended, mold growth can cause more problems later on and can damage the internal structure of your roof. If you see any of these signs but you’re not sure which part of the roof has been damaged, consider calling one of your trusted roofing contractors to do a proper inspection and make the necessary repairs.
